Does anyone know where I can buy some cheddar cheese in Nice???

I prefer to look somewhere in the center. I am desperate for this cheese to use in a recipie for Sat., and it is never certain that Cap3000 will have it.... If you know of any shop in town, that would be great!

Carrefour at Draguignan sells a Somerset Cheddar cheese.  Maybe some of their other branches do too.

Doug- Cantal is a good substitute for cheddar, but have you tried to melt it, it turns very oily. For the sandwiches it should be fine.Mollie- who needs a recipe to make sandwiches?Cheese lovers-I have a very good supplier of good strong white farmhouse cheddar if there is enough demand I could arrange a time and place for collection, but only if there are enough people interested as I would need to buy bulk.JanAnything for a peaceful life

Hello and thank you for the cheese replies. It is good to know that so many out there seek cheddar. I am making many sandwiches for a party, and one recipie is called cheddar chutney sandwich- which calls for sharp white cheddar to mix with a mango chutney. Very tea time, but also, its flavor might me lost a bit by mixing with the chutney. I still want my cheddar!

Thanks and keep us all posted!

Last year, during my Cheddar Yearning Era, I was alerted to a reasonable French substitute for Cheddar by some kindly soul on this very site. It's called Cantal Vieux.

On arriving at Casino, I bought a slice of Cantal which turned out to be something akin to a bar of soap. It wasn't the Vieux variety that I'd bought, but Cantal Jeune - a poor substitute indeed.

There is a third type called Cantal Entre Deux which, as you'd expect, is somewhere in between the two. You can get an acceptable sample of this in Monoprix (ave J. Medcin) but to get the Vieux, there's a really good cheese emporium on rue Lepante. I can't remember the details now, but I'll take a walk up there later today and post the name / number when I return.

P.S. What r u cooking by the way - sounds interesting - or is it a secret?

P.P.S. Apologies to all for any mistakes in French spelling. Corrections and flames welcomed

P.P.P.S. Does anyone have any recipies for a Cheddar curry?

davidl !!

Normally under the European Trade Descriptions Act - Cheddar would be marked as such , even in Carrefour !! Thus , logically , Red Leicester isn't going to be marked as anything else - but it's a excellent cheese anyway , so what's the problem ?

Isn't it good to know that French shops can provide us with Cheddar while UK supermarkets stock Camembert? It makes integration so much easier.

Pate feuilletee, chevre, grains de cumin. Four 180, 25 mins. Regale.
