Maybe.  I know nothing about the French legal system and try to keep as far from it as possible.

MikeP: You seem to assume that the French legal system embraces the concept of the presumption of innocence, as seen in many UK and US televison programmes and films.

That assumption would be wrong. Despite legislation that came in at the beginning of 2001.

Sorry St. G, but that is a total non sequitur.

It is illegal to keep a UK reg. car here for >6months.  The absence of a valid UK tax disc is not proof of that offence.  The word 'possibly' invalidates your argument from a legal standpoint.  Conviction requires proof,  and as we all know the law favours the criminal!!

An expired Tax Disc is as illegal in France as it is in the UK, because it signifies that the Owner has possibly kept it down here for longer than the allowed six months . The Gendarmerie at La Turbie Peage will fine a UK Registered vehicule with an out of date Tax Disc and can ask other embarrasing questions about residence and what job you do !!. It is irrelevant that the old French 'vignette' has been done away with ! They are also now asking for an up to date MOT - the French equivalent being marked on a  windscreen sticker.

Bush + Blair + Iraq = UK Plates prime target !!

Renault Clio, Ford Escorts, BMWs,Renault 19 and 21, VW Golfs , Audis all needed for boy racer spare parts - check out your Insurance !!

I think if you look at the fifth posting on this forum you might get a clue who the saddo was.  If not him, then someone else of the same pathetic mentality.

Interesting to note that he has not responded ..... obviously someone who lacks the courage of their convictions.

Anyway,  here is not as bad a Switzerland where every Swiss feels it his duty to act as policeman and enforce the law.  At least here it is only a puny and insignificant minority.

On returning to the long term car park at Nice airport a couple of weeks ago to pick up my UK registered car which I had left there a few days earlier, I discovered a sheet of unheaded A4 paper under the windscreen wiper.  Someone had written in neat block capital letters that my car had been observed unlicenced in the R U (the tax disc had expired) and not on French plates and threatening that further investigations would be made!

I presume some saddo was the author as anything more than this would have resulted in some official notification.  All very bizarre.  The lesson is not to leave the car parked so obviously - I usually park it so that I can't miss it when I return to the car park.

If the author of the note happens to read this forum they will be delighted to learn that the car is now legal

Is there some kind of intergovernmental sting operation going on that we should know about?  I wonder if you can SORN your UK registered car and say the address is in France?
