Bank holiday today?

No, not all bank branches are closed on Mondays: it can depend on whether they're open on Saturdays or not.

Okay, having said that, banks are one thing, days off from the office are another. As for the 'secteur public', any excuse to have a day off is a good excuse! e.g. I found the Sous-prefecture in Grasse to be shut on May 21st [the day after a Thursday bank holiday] ...grrrr!

In the UK, 'bank holiday' is an expression often used to mean 'national holiday'....it depends what Bluesky had in mind when [s]he asked the question?  I can confirm, however, that today is not a national holiday, otherwise I'd be either on the beach reading a book or in the mountains sipping coffee in a picturesque village square.

No bank holidays on weekdays this Christmas (Saturday) or New Year's Day (Saturday), neither before, between or after.  Zilch!  Nada!  Imagine that!
