Can anyone explain the strange practise of placing bottles of water outside the front doors of houses, tied down with string? Is it some sort of local custom to frighten off evil spirits, or is there a more logical explanation? Often there is more than one bottle! HELP!

Thanks for the explanations. I would never have thought that it had anything to do with cats or dogs!

And did you hear recently about the enterprising local who, to deter drunks urinating in his doorway, installed an automatic shower over his front door?

Not evil spirits...just cats!

It actually deters cats from urinating on your doorstep apparently.
