Sori ... I omitted to say that at the mairie, after providing the letter with the other documents ... the letter was then 'certified' ... ie given the rubber stamp.

Hi alterego!

For my initial visa, I also required the certificat d'herbergement.  Basically - it was a letter typed in French (by the person providing my accomodation) stating such .. and then he went to the local mairie with his carte d'identitée and justificatif de domicile to prove that he was indeed the author of the letter.

Cheers, but I was just fishing to see if someone could save me having to lose a day's french lessons to sit in a queue at the Prefecture for 3 hours so I can be told that a letter is not enough!

Why don't you ask the prefacture?  Normally a letter should be fine, if it's not they will tell you when you go down.
