You pay 5 or 10 per cent ( usually, you can choose) as a deposit when you sign the "compromis de vente", which commits you to buy. However, you have 7 days to decide if you want to go on with the purchase. If you change your mind after this period, you will lose your money. You pay the remainder on the signature day (which is called 'signature de l'acte authentique'). Good luck with your purchase,Joëlle

When you buy , you only pay a deposit, usually 10% of the purchase price.

2 or 3 month later the notaire will tell you he is ready to sign.

On that day you pay the owner and the notaire, and you get the key.

Simple, good luck
