It's true that the repair costs are outrageous. My Sony wasn't mistreated but stopped functioning just after the warranty expired and it cost a fortune to repair.

Usually you have to take them to a Sony dealer and they send it off for repair.

It is quite expensive having these cameras repaired.  I had an old Canon S10 with a few problems, and a Minolta xt that I dropped, and the minumum repair costs were 250EUR each.  I just paid 247EUR for the xt.

If you drop a camera they wont repair it under warranty, unless there are no signs (internal as well as external) of it having been dropped.

In the end I repaired both of them myself by just opening them up and pushing the pieces back into place.

Here is how I repaired the S10 with duct tape For the xt I didnt need any tape, a couple of bits had been knocked loose by the shock and I pushed them back in place.
