how to be self employed in france

i would like to work for myself in france without setting up a company. all i want is to have a bank account to pay cheques for my work into and the pay the appropiate tax. is something this simple availiable in france?

Interestingly enough, such a status does exist: it's called 'le statut indépendant' (yes, with an 'a', even).

According to this article on the subject, it's easy enough to start off like this, but gradually the taxman and socially security come back at you, it seems, with compulsory & arbitrary URSSAF (social security) fees plus increasingly higher 'professional' taxes that you'll need to learn how to offset with a clever strategy of deductions against tax if you want to avoid being taxed into oblivion..
