Possibly because I used to have a British passport (born and educated in UK), married a Frenchman and became French so French passport = 2 passports.

My children have French passports through their father.

My daughter's children, born in France of French father, and my grand-children, have the right to apply for a British passport via daughter's country of birth UK, but it has to be done before the children are 20 years old!  Now too late but as the girl are twins it was too expensive and we learnt this from the British Consulate in Bordeaux!!!

We all live and learn but I would think it is worth trying to get ID cards but not sure they get French citizenship as that is another story.
