I assume your friends are not referring to motor insurance or life insurance, but buildings & contents insurance.  In France, these are most often served within a single combined contract called 'assurance multirisque habitation'. According to the information found on this website (for example), you only absolutely need such a contract if you're renting, but having said that, if I were the property owner, I'd want to be insured!

As for insurers, all the large insurance companies and high-street banks offer such contracts and they're pretty standardised, unless you have very specific individual requirements e.g. valuables with an above-average value, in which case you'll need to find the right company which offers the specific contractual options you need.

The best place to start is where Wendy has referred you to. Later, once your broker has explained the ins and outs of French insurance in English and you're more comfortable with the terminology, you may want to compare prices with an on-line quote from a competitive French insurer such as Direct Assurance (http://www.direct-assurance.fr) who, in my experience, are hard to beat price-wise ~ then you can weigh up whether the personal English service (and peace of mind should you unfortunately have to make a claim) is worth the slightly higher cost.

Hi trys,

There are several English-speaking insurance companies in Brittany. You can start by looking on this page of AngloINFO Bretagne: http://brittany.angloinfo.com/af/22/
