Would anyone know if an Annulement of marriage exist in France or does it have to be a full-on divorce through a lawyer?  A friend, American who was just married to a French in March this year and separated for 1 month - total of 4 month marriage life - in Mandelieu, supposedly not even registered yet at Nante.  I have hear that she can just go to the Mandelieu Mairie to get the marriage annuled, however, the Mairie said that it was not possible.

If this is true, can anyone shed some light on if there is an inexpensive but reliable lawyer, approximately how much it will cost and about how long will the process take.

Many thanks for everyones help in advance.

What the Mairie told your friend is true.

A marriage contract in France is only dissolved through divorce.

There does exist a procedure known as "déclaration de nullité" which is for the purposes of cleansing your marriage record with the Catholic church so that you can marry once more at a Catholic ceremony.  However, that procedure is awfully personal with intimate details being revealed and in any case, has no bearing on the civil contract.
