I`ve done this trip the other way round a couple of times. The first time I came the Alps way which is a  spectacular drive. I cannot recommend it enough. We stopped in Dijon one night and then Geneva one night, the scenery, particulalry from Geneva to the Cote d`Azur is breathtaking. You could probably do this route in two days with just the one stop in Geneva but we decided to take it a little bit easy.

The second time, we drove down the west coast and took a few days over it stopping at La Rochelle, Biarritz and Carcassonne. The scenery was not quite as breathtaking but we went through some beautiful towns and villages.

Can`t remember the names of hotels we stayed in unfortunately! If you`ve got time, I recommend you explore this gorgeous country rather than just take motorways all the way.

Tournus is a nice place to break a journey north.  It is not far from the autoroute and there are plenty of hotels.

We paid about 30E for an airconditioned room in the hotel next to the station.

Might be best to book if you are travelling on a Saturday in July/Aug
