does anyone know which of the two are best for the bullfights, i.e. general atmosphere/festivities etc and at what times of year. Also what are the crowds like, is it OK for an 8-year old or can it get a bit rowdy?

any info much appreciated

Well apparently the best place is Nimes  - Easter and soon. I'm advised by my bull fighting friends the 11 / 12 Sept Arles event will be good and it's a fraction nearer from the east.

I think it's OK for an 8 year old, never did me any harm - can't speak for the bull's though.

With my dislike for bullfighting I'm highly unqualified to answer the question as to which arena is 'best'.

Arles is a beautiful city with a great deal of cultural and architectural interest and plenty to see and do, probably more than Nimes,  so setting aside the bullfighting issue,  I'd recommend a visit to Arles in preference to Nimes.
