OpenOffice.org is great, but if all you want to do is view Excel files then you could try the Excel Viewer utility from Microsoft.

N.B. Neither OOo nor the Excel Viewer utility can open password-protected Excel files.

Squirrel,You don't have to have Excel in order to read/see it. Type "View Excel" in your browser and there are several free downloadable programs that will let you read it.You can also download OpenOffice.org (aka OOo) this is free, a full Office Suite which will enable you not only to read Excel files but also to modify them and then save them as Excel files where you have finished. Hi SimonMicrosoft scan revealed some upgrades available for office xp and requests product cd and key, seems strange as office xp didn't come pre-installed with the pc nor with a cd rom to install manually?

.xls files are created in and opened by Microsoft Excel. Do you have Microsoft Excel loaded on your computer?
