Yes, a couple of border Police boarded the train I was on last week at Garavan (first station in France after Ventimiglia) and made a beeline for a passenger who was promptly escorted off the train.  I hear the Police tell him his Carte de Séjour was no longer valid and did not permit him to enter France.

It could also be to the fact that last month an stabbing (or similar) happened on one of the trains and they have upped police presence since. There are usually plain clothed police on trains anyway!

The police are more likely checking for albanians and the like using the trains to cross over from italy!!

There may be alot of yachties around looking for work but very few of them are illegal immigrants, they generally are legal on french /european soil as long as they dont say Im an american (for example) and I m looking for a job!

The various border police & vigipirate (which is against terrorists, not Long John Silver) will mean that one can expect more ID checks without seeing a conspiracy against the yachties,

Now if it was the tax people I'd believe you!
