Normally XP can be reinstalled over an existing install of itself. If you have problems with your current installation of XP and contemplating the need of a complete wipe and fresh install, then wait and try this before.Get a windows startup disk (Control Panel/Add remove Programs/ Startup disk).Boot up using this disk. Boot with CD rom support.Insert XP cd rom.Change to cd drive in dos "{driveletter}:" followed by EnterType "setup.exe" and follow the onscreen instructions. This will reinstall XP on the machine without wiping all personal data or software additionally installed.Another thing to do is to run the systemfilechecker to verify the integrety of all system files. Use run form the start menue and type "sfc.exe". Go to settings and enable check for deleted files and check for changed files. This will ask you to insert xp CD rom in to a drive and to extract system files from that disk if there are any found to be corrupted.Hope that helpsSascha

Hi - thanks she has AVG and we have done the defrag and clean-up.   Also installed the trial version of Norton, which has fixed the viruses.

So hopefully its done the job.  Touch wood!

Both Trend Micro and McAfee offer free on-line virus checks. AVG offer free virus software to download which is updated regularly.

Thanks, we will try that!    The only thing is that her internet keeps closing down due to the virus/es.    So it might be the case that it needs to be re-installed completely.

First thing to do is get Norton's anti virus program buy on line and run it, then visit symantec web site after you know the viruses names and download the programs which will remove the viruses, and then turn on the firewall in XP and then run disk defrag and disc cleaner and you should be ok, and you should not have to reinstall XP
