Thanks for the hints!  Very useful and reassuring.  But tax aspects are still somewhat behond me.

If rentinga flat out, is the rent received taxed on a high tax bracket / as income?  I don't know the French law on this but believe it differs significantly to the UK law.

Hi,  It is simple...

DO NOT GO WITH ANY AGENCY IF YOU CAN AVOID IT!!!!

If you live far away from your new home you will that find your appartment rented out and you have no idea. 

If you plan to do holiday rentals then use the key in post method.  Email me and will explain how it works.

Think about it!!!! "Sorry Mr. Newowner your flat was only rented out for one week in Nov.!!!!  We will only pay 400 euros into your account"

Otherwise if you are totally lost then build a network of poeple around the area that can help and support you. 

One Irish friend was told that her flat was empty for weeks only to fly to nice to find a family in it.
