want model fun... (airplanes actually!)

want to buy a model airplane for a friend's b'day, and not really sure where to start.

Are there model airplane clubs in the area?

Is anyone selling one, or could recommend a good plane model (he can fly real planes!), and/or any good model shops with wide selection of stuff?

Please reply to kat_girl_001@yahoo.co.uk.

Look forward to hearing from  you.

There's a good model shop Bd Wilson about midway between Juan les PIns and Antibes - "Halle du Modelisme". The guy who runs it actually fly models himself (unlike some model shops).Model flying takes some getting used to but the principles are the same as for real flying. If he's not used to models choose a high wing, slow model which doesn"t stall easily. Graupner and others make a few for beginners (the "Charter" and "Baron" are basic starter models)There are three types of kits. The purist ones (where all you get is a plan and a box of balsa) and the "almost ready to fly" ones where the model is partially built, and the "ready to fly" which can almost fly right out of the box. Don't go for a purist one at first.Radio frequency is important (if you're flying at the same time as some kid is mucking about with his model car on the same frequency in the same area, you'll crash). So flying with a club is important as frequencies are controlled by coloured flags and mutual agreement. The main clubs in the area are in Grasse (La Sarree), Villeneuve Loubet (ASVL) and Greoulieres (summer only). There is also a model glider club at Caussols (behind Grasse). If only I still had the time.......
