As we see France as our home indefinitely, we opted to send our son to the local school when he was 4 years old.  Learning another language is something we would have liked for him anyway, so what better way than total immersion?  Of course, it has not always been easy, but it has been far less frustrating for him than being at the playground and struggling to communicate with the other children as he did when we first arrived.  It is quite amusing to listen to your child nattering away in another language and stirs up very proud feelings, too!  I think it is important for children to have a sense of community and that they feel part of their local social scene, so it depends on where and how you live.  Of course, down the road we may consider a bilingual education, if we find we are struggling to keep up at home, but for now we feel we have chosen the best route for him.

Hi

Advice will vary hugely dependent on lots of variables eg:

Age of children? Temporary or permanent move to France? Special needs? Personalities? Location? Preference for French local school or International? Your hopes and expectations? Procedures? Vaccinations?...

And, of course, depending on individual experiences - I have 3 children and 3 very different personal experiences of becoming bilingual as well as 3 sets of decisions to make about schooling...

Good luck to you all

Sally
