The speciality might be the notices which accompany such fittings in hotels.

I remember that in the bathroom of one hotel I stayed in there was a sign by the hairdryer :

"This may be used only for drying hair and not for the other purpose"

The signs on the toilet were stylised graphics depicting depicting body parts and intended to show which buttons to press if you were male and which if you were female.  It scared me!

I used to live in Tokyo, am trying to think what was so special about Japanese toilets? The public ones were very plush and played waterfall music to mask other sounds. Most homes had either squat or super-modern western style toilets, and dont' forget the toilet slippers! I remember once being invited to lunch and the super-modern toilet had a remote control - I pressed a button and some contraption sprayed water all over my T.shirt from inside the bowl - most embarassing!
