I've been told it's much better to sow grass seeds in the autumn rather than the spring because you have less of a battle with interfering weeds!

Based on my experiences I would have said now was a good time providing you can water it in effectively. I think I would tend to water in the evenings to give it overnight to soak in well.

If it is still getting a lot of sun in the day, I might even hold off a couple of weeks to prevent the chance of scorching.

For patching lawns, I must admit I tend to use one of the propriatory grass seed / fertilizer / mulch mixes rathar than straight seed. The mulch helps retain moisture and the fertiliser gives it a good kick start

I think you sow grass seed either now or in the early spring.
