Scabies does sound horrid! Thanks for the suggestion of taking a photo, I hadn't actually thought of that. However, it seems to be clearing up on its own and he's not scratching. Maybe it wasn't too drastic after all. I'll keep an eye on it and maybe go to the pharmacy if it gets worse again. Thanks for your advice!

It sounds like 'gales' which literally means scabies but don't panic!  This is mites in veterinary terms as eurokiné suggests!

My dogs and cats get this and I buy a product from the pharmacy for it.  Costs a fraction of the price of that from the vet and very efficient.  Just chucked out the latest empty bottle so can't remember the brand, but if you go into your pharmacy and just look at the animal products you'll quickly identify it.

sounds like it may be ear mites which can be extremely irritating for the cat.

Maybe your vet can give you something for the problem if it is as banal as that if you take a photograph of the problem & show it to him?
