I have cared for two Beagles both for six months and a Great Dane for six months, and they were all fantastic dogs.  The Beagles are great family dogs, but have a very strong character, so be prepared to train your pet right from the start.  Otherwise you will find him on the table eating scraps (or worse) when you turn your back.  The Great Dane I found to be a great playful friendly dog, lovely with other animals and people, quite dim - but makes up for that in looks.   Both are hunting dogs so need lots of exercise.

Good luck!

Wow!  A beagle is a big change from a Great Dane.  But, if it is a beagle puppy you want, there is a four month old beagle puppy at Sans Collier Provence.  His name is Kasper.  http://www.sanscollierprovence.org

Thanks - I went there on Sunday and just missed out on getting a Beagle puppy.  None of the other dogs were ok because they either did not like children or cats!

Refuge Jean Duflos in Antibes behind Decathlon. They have some wonderful and gentle big size dogs.

There is a great refuge in the Var called Sans Collier Provence.  We adopted our dream dog there and highly recommend the refuge.  The people who volunteer there are amazing and take great care of the dogs that stay there. Their website is http://www.sanscollierprovence.org  They have a young Great Dane cross (Zigane) at the moment but no purebred Great Danes.

There are also a few sites for adopting Great Danes (they are called Dogue Allemand in French). Here is one ... Dogues Allemands Sans Famille http://da-sans-famille.forumculture.net  Here is a link to the dogs available for adoption on another site:  Association Dogue Allemand Notre http://www.dogueallemandnotre.com/enadoption1.html  I am sure you can find others, as well.  Viva Street also has a link for Great Danes to be adopted.  But, be careful because some of the dogs aren't actually Great Danes. http://adoption-chien.vivastreet.com/adoption-animal/q/dogue-allemand

Good luck in your search!
