Panama

The place where the Atlantic and Pacific meet, a master piece of engineering: The Panama Canal has become a fundamental part of the country’s identity and history, as well as having a major impact on its economy and culture. The Canal has attracted people from all over the world allowing Panama to host a wide diversity of cultures within its territory.

Panama’s name comes from its first settlers and it means “abundance of fish and butterflies”, which reflects on the biodiversity of the nation. After the independence movements in the region Panama became part of the territory known as Gran Colombia which was later dissolved in 1831 but remained part of Colombia until 1903 when it got its independence.
